How do I change the company name in Acctivate using Database Maintenance?

Learn how to update the company name or ID in Acctivate using the Database Info window, and why you should not change the database name.

You can update your company’s display name and company ID in Acctivate through the Database Maintenance utility.
These fields control how your company name appears in Acctivate and on reports — but they are different from the actual database name.

⚠️ Important: You should never modify the Database Name in this window. Changing the Database Name will prevent Acctivate from connecting to your company data.


Steps to Change the Company Name or ID

  1. Open Database Maintenance

    • Close Acctivate on all workstations.

    • On the server or a workstation with Acctivate installed, open Database Maintenance.

    • This can be found in your Windows Start menu under:
      Acctivate → Database Maintenance

  2. Open the Database Info window

    • From the toolbar at the top, select Database → Database Info.

    • A list of companies connected to your Acctivate system will appear.

  3. Select your company

    • Highlight the company you want to update.

    • Click Edit.

  4. Modify the Company ID or Name

    • You can safely change the Company ID (used to identify the company within the Login window) and/or the Company Name (the name that appears on the title bar and in reports).

    • Example:

      • Old Name: “ABC Distributors”

      • New Name: “ABC Supply & Services”

    • Click Save when finished.

  5. ⚠️ Do NOT modify the Database Name

    • The Database Name field links Acctivate to your SQL Server database.

    • If this field is changed, Acctivate will no longer be able to connect to your company data, and you may receive a “Failed to connect to database” error.

  6. Reopen Acctivate and verify

    • Open Acctivate and confirm that the new company name appears on the login window and at the top of the main application screen.


Expected Result

The updated company name and/or ID display correctly in Acctivate, reports, and on the login screen.

Actual Result (Before Fix)

The company name remains unchanged, or Acctivate may fail to connect if the Database Name is modified incorrectly.


Additional Notes

  • Changing the Company ID or Name does not affect your licensing, customers, or accounting data.

  • If Acctivate cannot open your company after a change, verify that the Database Name matches the name listed in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS).
