Configure Product Types and Product Sales Categories
File > Configuration Management > Inventory > Product Type / Product Sales Categories
Product Type and Product Sales Category are two ways to distinguish between groups of products that go beyond the primary categorization of Product Class.
Product Type and Product Sales Category can both be added as filters when running reports and when filtering the Product List & Inventory Manager but they also have a few key differences.
Product Type is required when setting up a new product. Additionally, Product Type is included as a filter in the Product Lookup window. Often Product Type is chosen based on what is most useful in the lookup window.
For example, finished goods vs raw materials or fresh vs frozen.
Product Sales Category is optional when creating a new Product. It unlocks 4 additional reports that show your sales data grouped with Product Sales Category subheadings: Product Sales Category by Customer, Sales Category Summary, Product by Sales Category, & Sales Category by Salesperson. Most commonly, Product Sales Category is used when there's a need for additional sales reporting beyond Product Class.
For example, a company selling snacks from around the world may use Product Class for the type of snack but enable Product Sales Category to see additional sales reporting broken down by country of origin.
